LANTERNS ON THE LAKE
We weren’t quite sure what to expect when we woke up this morning Then it started… tents going up by the score, people appearing all day… more tents! Then at about 8pm the doors to the barn opened complete with the new stage (built by Ian, Glyn and Ian) and the Barn filled with tea lights and fairy lights. Tables and chairs round the outside of the room and blankets and cushions on the floor. The room started to fill and fill quickly. The two support acts played to full houses and were really good. And then at 10.30pm on walked Lanterns on the Lake (they’ve played Glastonbury and other festivals this year)… they were Superb! What a night! To a full house they brought their very special type of music and great voices. There was people who had never heard of them before that are now fans. I think it was just one of those moments in your life that you will remember, the way the room looked, the atmosphere, the crowd and crowned by the fantastic music. A Big Thanks goes to Ian from Higher Sounds who supplied the PA and did the sound (and also built the stage).

And we would like to say that Lanterns on the Lake donated all the proceeds of the night to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. We are at the moment working out the total amount raised over the month and will post the final figure on our websites asap. A massive thanks to all involved this month; staff who have worked really hard, customers who have given to the charity so well and have been so nice to us… and all the bands, singers, players and sound technicians. And to the 100+ people who have asked… Yes, Lanterns on the lake will be back next year!

HARPETH RISING
In the Barn we saw an absolutely fabulous night of Bluegrass music from Harpeth Rising from the USA on the last night of their British tour. We were really pleased to have them play here and to stay with us… great music and really lovely people (and the Yellow dress will stay in Richie’s mind for a long time). We are going to try and get them back next year.

C-Fest Weekend
Over the weekend of the 16th, 17th and 18th of July, we had the amazing C-Fest Festival.

Friday night started off with Rantin Richie (Poet, Master of Mayhem and Barman), followed by Ian M.Anderson (the North-East's best-kept secret) with his first set. The hours were full of songs being sung and the ale flowing freely. The stage (and mic’s) were then opened to the floor and wow, we were not disappointed… singers, guitarists, percussionist… and even a bloke with a ‘Pam Ayres’ poem book!!!!… and all held together by Rantin Richie. Then it was back to Ian M Anderson to finish the night off in style… everything from casts being ‘snipped’ to Buddy Holly medley’s… but when he led the audience in Sweet Caroline, it was something to behold!!!!!!!!!

Saturday started at 1pm, once again with Richie and Ian with more of the same (maybe not so much mayhem) and then the Music continued all through the day in the bar with singer/songwriters, folk bands and more players from the floor until 7pm, when Granny Smith’s Maggot (the hardest working Irish Band in the North) played. They had the place jumping… what a brilliant night! Then it was through to the barn for the Arrival, a young rock band, who finished the night off well.

Sunday was very special… the Amazing Dan Donnelly sang and played during lunch time and because he was staying with us, he just continued to sing and play… he must have performed for at least 5 or 6 hours during the day and night.

A big thank you to everyone who was involved and who all gave their services free of charge.

THE HURRICANES... PLUS GET EDUCATED
By Rantin Richie - A few weeks ago at tan hill we had a band with an average age of 15 playing from Middleborough, Electric Nightmares, and the first band on tonight get educated from Barnard Castle weren’t much older. how refreshing it is too, not to have to deal with boring old muso’s who’ve been there, jammed with whoever, and may be technically gifted, and have a nice repartee about how drunk they got at their last 200 gigs, blah blah blah ! Both bands turned up tonight with exactly the right attitude to impress an old cynic like myself. Get Educated are brand new, and the lead singer turned with his mum in her car. Fantastic !! To start off with they had lots of effects on the go, and not a lot of confidence or strong songs to back it all up, and it came across as shambolic to be honest, but by the middle of their set they reverted to playing flat out Indie/Punk and it came across as very tight, and I think that’s the direction that this band should be taking. The young lead singer was a dead ringer for Ian Curtis and I only wish he’d of stopped smiling at his mates every five minutes and really put on a show, but again, that will come. One for the future.   The Hurricanes are a band from Glasgow, and it’s hard to see where they fit into the scheme of things regarding today’s music scene. They were leap years ahead of Get Educated, in the fact they had a very tight rhythm section, great vocals, and a great bass player who couldn’t be with them tonight for some reason. Essentially they are a covers band, and a very good one at that, and I’m sure they may get lots of gigs at colleges and weddings I would really love to see more  youngsters for all their flaws, on stage.   Having said all that, back to my original sentiments and well done to both bands for turning up at Tan Hill with the right attitude, and the attitude was a desire to play, and just for the hell of it. Good on yer.

Review of Gig - Saturday February 7th 2009

TOM HINGLEY (Inspiral Carpets) / ANDREW YEADON BAND / PETER HOOK (New Order) / RANTIN RICHIE

This was the first "proper" gig that I had organised at Tan Hill, which is as you should know the highest pub in Britain, which is situated on the corner of the North Yorkshire moors, but also very close to the borders of both Cumbria and Durham.

The actual gig was the brainchild of Scott Cunningham, who is a blind lad from Scotland, and who does many benefits for the "Guide dogs for the blind" with his charity "Travistrek". (Travis is the name of his particular guide dog, and who goes everywhere with him). The next trip after visiting Tan Hill is called Travistrek 5, and goes from Fort William and eventually ends up at the famous Ibrox Park in Glasgow, home of Glasgow Rangers Football Club. There are many ex Rangers players taking part on that particular trip including Terry Hurlock, ex Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram, Alex Rae and others. Anyway the featured artist on tonights benefit was Tom Hingley the former frontman from the Inspiral Carpets. Tom previously worked at the legendary Manchester club, the Hacienda as he told us during his set. And to complement the evening, it was New Order bass player Peter Hook who was one of the supports for the night doing a blinding 2 hour DJ set. (It was his band New Order that had financed the Hacienda back in the 80's, a club which saw a whole musical movement evolve from, with local bands such as James, the Stone Roses, Happy Mondays all become huge stars, and including Tom Hingleys band, the Inspiral Carpets. Madonna also played one of her early UK shows here too.)

First on the bill tonight were local Barnard Castle 4 piece the Andrew Yeadon Band. It was obvious that everyone had come here tonight to see Tom and Peter only, which is a shame as I thought the band played really well, and delivered a very broody set which could have easily been comparable to another legendary Manchester band Joy Division. I must say fair play to Andy and his band who sold £80 worth of their own CDs, and they kindly donated that money to Scotts charity.

I can personally testify that Tom Hingley is a very nice pleasant bloke, and has loads to say for himself, and to be honest I actually wished i lived near him, so i could chat to him as a mate on a regular basis, as his conversation is so varied and so interesting. Anyway he came on with his guitar and delivered a very bold set, and had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Quite a few Inspirals songs were thrown into the mix to keep the baying pack happy. What i liked about Tom, is the fact that you can tell he is very much at home doing solo shows, and the vocals are, well beautifully delivered, and his guitar can certainly talk. (Tom has a new band now which he does gigs with every so often, called Tom Hingley and The Lovers. He gave me a copy of their 2nd album the next day called "Highlights" and a lovely album full of beautiful soundscapes it is too. The Lovers feature Jason Brown on lead guitar, Paul Hanley on drums with his brother Steve on bass. Keyboards are by Kelly Wood, and the band are signed to Newmemorabilia. The track listing for the album is " Kick Out The Clocks / All Of My Time / Let Go / No Easy Exit / Venomous / 3am / Highlights / I Was Wrong / Both (My personal favourite. Very melancholic and Very Joy Division-esque both lyrically and musically with it'sslightly doomladen mood) / Evergreen / Open Up Your Eyes (The only track on the album i dislike, which sounds a bit bedroom student-y Morrisey type angsty)". After Tom we had "Hooky" (aka Peter Hook) legenday bass player from New Order. Pete started out his musical life in the punk group Warsaw, and then they turned into the hugely influential band Joy Division managed by the enigmatic Tony Wilson, and spearheaded by the Iconic figure of Ian Curtis. I didn't quite know what to expect of Hooky's Djing, although I knew he meant business when i told him i had no hedaphone sfor mixing, he just looked at me wryly and said after a while, "Um, interesting !". What we did get, however, was a very slick polished set that harkened back to the 80's Manchester scene, which he plucked out especially for the evening. He actually played a very danceable version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" which i never got to ask him about. Anyway he was a very nice good humoured bloke. Did i tell you I gave him a Tan Hill Staff T Shirt and also as part of his "rider" for the evening, he got a Kit Kat. Altogether a great evening, and Tom will be back in the Summer.
